A New Space, A New Story

We kindly request the pleasure of your company for the official opening of our new workshop. Our studio previously moved from Eindhoven to the Optiek building at the Hembrug site in Zaandam. It's an old industrial area within a stone's throw from Amsterdam.

We thoroughly enjoy working in our workshop/studio/showroom. The showroom has been styled by Dutch Design Year.

The Hembrug site will be in a bustle of art and design activities around the time of our opening:
ART Zaanstad (21-25 May) / Design District (21-23 May).

We would like to celebrate the beginning of a new story together with you!

Milan Vs. Our Opening

For the first time since 2009, this year I'm going to skip the madhouse called Milan. Usually we would have been very busy making preparations, so there is a slight sense of emptiness... But we have good reason. This year we want to focus entirely on the opening of our new premises at the Hembrug site in Zaandam, near Amsterdam.

The opening of Studio Dirk Vander Kooij and Dutch Design Year will take place during Design District at the Hembrug site on Friday, May the 23rd 2014, about 17:00 hours. So make a note in your diary and in due course we'll send you an invitation with some extra information.

Project New Babylon, The Hague? Check.

In November 2013 we finished project New Babylon. Miranda Lantink, head designer of this office, retail and residential building in The Hague, has asked us to design and produce products for this prestigious new development.

What started as a small project grew into a half year of sketching, prototyping, changing, consulting, meetings, cursing and swearing, cozy get-togethers with Miranda, polishing, stressing, transporting and installing... But the results are impressive. If we say so ourselves ;-)

Decide for yourself by the images.

Goodbye Eindhoven / Hello Amsterdam

We’re leaving Eindhoven and it hurts... especially me. I’ve been around in Eindhoven, I met inspiring people (my girlfriend Marleen, for one), I’ve been drunk (with joy now and then as well) and I watched my graduation project blossom into a furniture brand and a design studio. We saw the Dutch Design week mature into a world renowned event, so we’ll definitely return every year! In short: Eindhoven and I have lived through rain and shine...

But it’s time to go, that is to the “Hembrugterrein” in Zaandam. It’s an old industrial zone where artillery equipment used to be made. The place has been transformed into an area specifically designated for creative industries. We will move into the “Optiekgebouw”, a building seemingly tailored to our needs, in the middle of a green area, on the waterfront and Amsterdam within a stone’s throw. Where does one find such a place nowadays?

I’m convinced that this move will give us the opportunity to innovate permanently and to make even higher quality products.

The future is ours!

In May 2013, during a visit of the Hembrugterrein in Zaandam, The Netherlands, Dirk was given the opportunity to present our Studio to King Willem Alexander and Queen Maxima. Dirk handed over a Royal Orange Chubby Chair that was especially made for the occasion. The royal pair visited the Hembrugterrein as part of their tour to the twelve provinces.
